Artist and psychologist Dr. Michelle Chan with her paintings and artworks.

INTRODUCTION 

​

Dr. Michelle Chan is an artist and a clinical psychologist who believes that life is about love & meaningful connections, and discovering what truly makes us feel alive. With a passion for unleashing creativity, embracing positive psychology and cultivating inner treasures, she delivers experiential trainings on mind tools that empower individuals to live fulfilling, purposeful, and flourishing lives. She has been invited by corporates, non-profit organizations, universities, and schools to conduct numerous trainings on sustainable psychological wellbeing and professional development. Her colorful and vibrant abstract paintings have been showcased in both solo and group art exhibitions. She has also composed and released an instrumental easy-listening music album on positive psychology titled “Love You Love Me”. She regularly shares her psychology knowledge and related artwork through a wellness newsletter as well as various media platforms and interviews. Dr. Michelle is also the founder of Mic Mic, a lifestyle brand that offers everyday objects adorned with art, providing a means of self-expression, inspiration for creativity & inner treasures cultivation, and sparking imagination. Being fuelled by unwavering enthusiasm in the application of creative arts in positive psychology, she writes, paints and composes, experimenting with various art forms, for the purpose of our psyche’s enrichment. Raised and educated in Hong Kong and Sydney, she finds inspiration in both the serene beauty of nature and the vibrant energy of city life.

 

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

​

Dr. Michelle holds psychology degrees from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and a Master of Fine Art (MFA) degree from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). She has been practicing as a clinical psychologist since 2004. She has previously worked in the hospital & university, and she is currently working in private practice. Over the years, she has been integrating Mindfulness Meditation, Focusing-Oriented Expressive Arts (FOAT®), Inner Relationship Focusing, and Positive Psychology into her daily life, art & music creations, and clinical practice. She is certified as a Focusing Trainer: Specialization in FOAT®, a Focusing-Oriented Therapist: Specialization in FOAT®, as well as a Focusing Trainer (trained in Inner Relationship Focusing). Additionally, she is a Certified Mindfulness-Based Emotional Balance (MBEB) Teacher.

 

Dr. Michelle served as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Focusing Institute (HKFI) from 2016 to 2022 and she is a Honorary Consultant for the Mental Health Foundation (MHF). She has served as an honorary clinical supervisor for Master of Social Sciences (Clinical Psychology) trainees at HKU and CUHK. She has also provided clinical supervision to social workers and other mental health professionals. She specializes in providing psychotherapy to adolescents and adults. She has authored and co-authored in academic research papers and psychology-related publications. A research paper on neuropsychology that she co-authored, was awarded HKU’s Research Output Prize. Dr. Michelle has received training in various psychotherapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), 7-day Intensive Foundational Training in teaching Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) from Oxford University’s Oxford Mindfulness Centre (OMC), and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) for Individuals.
